Monday Nitro Football

I wonder if ESPN will take a queue from NBC and do what people have been telling them to do and don't set the MNF schedule in stone at the end of the last season. Tonight is an awesome example of two reams not living up to anyone's expectations. 3rd and 4th in the NFC South does not a MNF game make. I love my Buccaneers, but the whole of the US of A does not have such a die hard love for the sole NFC Super Bowl Champions of the millennium. Have you seen what closes out the MNF season? Jets v. Miami! Wow, that will keep me from watching "Scrooged" or "KISS Saves Christmas"...NOT!

3000 in his post today brought up drafting as a head coach. As much as Gruden hates to develop young players (see the 2002 Oakland Raiders), he has put together some great draft classes in the past three years. We'll be 9-7 next year, and in the NFC South, that could win the division. Drew Brees is going to lose his arm. You read it here 1st, people.

(Tom, if you're bitter that I missed the game last night, feel free to delete this post.)

It's pretty unlikely that Monday Night Football will be granted flex scheduling like Sunday Night Football has. Bumping a game from Sunday afternoon to Sunday night has considerably fewer implications than Sunday afternoon to Monday night; especially now that the NFL Network has kajiggered everything up with late season Thursday night games. What's more, it could turn into a logistical nightmare having two separate networks competing for marquee prime time games.

The bit about the draft was geared more towards front offices in general than head coaches specifically. In fact, it wasn't Mike Sherman, Coach that doomed the Packers, it was Mike Sherman, General Manager. (To be honest, I don't know how hands on Gruden is in TB's draft....) I think it's pretty well established that Head Coach and General Manager are positions that require too much work to be handled by one man. Possibly the only thing worse than a coach that wants to be general manager, is a team owner that wants to be general manager.

George Allen is TB's GM. Gruden ran McKay out of town and got the GM he knows how ot work with. He gets pretty much what he wants now.
